Leaves & Mini Trips

I am clearing some of my annual leave early next year, have 4 weeks leave booked during Chinese new year. But nope, we are not planning to go back to Medan during CNY. The bulk of it will actually be time for me to look after Rafa so that Wenty can concentrate on doing whatever she needs to do for the initial set up of her planned business. I am also supposed to help her set up her web site etc.

We'll try to go for a short (1 week or so) trip during those four weeks though. The question is where? One week is too short to justify long flights and the thought of screwing up Rafa's routines like we did in last year's Asian trip do not appeal to us at all.

That pretty much leaves us with either a domestic trip or a NZ trip. Anyone with a kid friendly itinerary suggestion for a week or so in Jan/Feb?

I kinda fancy going to Tassie and visiting either the cradle mountain and the coastal areas. But then again, we'll be spending four days in Tassie very soon when my parents in law are here (they'll arrive next week! :)). Four days (3 1/2 really) won't cover much of Tasmania, especially with two old ones and a little one in tow so we'll only be covering the two main cities towns and the immediate areas surrounding them (Port Arthur, Richmond, etc).

So looking forward to the Tassie mini trip and the CNY break already!

Given u'll only go to some part of Tassie with ur in laws, why not explore another part on ur own?

Perhaps drive you car and catch one of those Spirit of Tassie? That way u guys can explore diff part of Tassie. A beautiful place to visit :)

A drive to Adelaide perhaps?? or perhaps Gold Coast if not too hot?

Yeah, those are actually my top two options at the moment.
1. Road trip to Adelaide (relaxing drive there via coastal road, spend a couple of nights at the coastal towns, a few nights in/around Adelaide to visit their local attractions and one night in Grampians on the way back). As long as we don't have the 40 degrees days at that time, which we sometime have in VIC and SA in summer.
2. Another trip to Tassie, skip the cities and straight to the mountains and coasts. No spirit though, it's actually very expensive to get a private cabin. Cost difference to flying and renting a car for only a week is minimal so not worth the 10-12 hours rocky ferry ride. If it's a longer trip I may consider flying Wenty & Rafa over and booking just a reclining seat for myself to ferry the car across.

Not so keen of visiting QLD in summer with their rain and storm season at that time. Very keen on NZ south island and nearly booked air tickets to Christchurch (only < $600 return with Virgin for 3 of us!) but then I read they still have frequent aftershocks some as big as 5.5 last week so that's out for now.

NZ South Island is good to visit during the summer time. Won't be too cold esp with Rafa but yes.. way too many earthquakes lately, esp around Christchurch, which is probably the reasons for cheap tickets.

If only a few days, why not Queenstown? If u're really keen on NZ South Island. Apart from that maybe fly to Auckland and drive up Bay of Plenty? I did some research for our NZ trip last time and a lot of pretty places to visit. That would be a good 4-5 days to explore if you're keen. Quite a bit of driving with a little one though.

I didn't know Spirit is that exy. Thought they would be quite cheap coz Melb-Tassie not a very long distance anyway. But if it's going to take 10-12 hours and cost a bit might as well fly and rent a car.

Well, whatever the choice is, hopefully the weather will be good and u guys get to enjoy a little break :)

Have u actually thought about Fiji?? Not a bad place to visit with kids. A lot of promo going on for flight and accommodation. Most if not all resort have kids stay and eat for free. All you have to pay is the ticket. Family friendly place!!

Thanks, may be worth considering just using Christchurch as an entry point, have a quick look of CC then drive straight to Queenstown the next day and fly back from Queenstown. We'll see. North island is an option too I guess but ticket to South island is cheaper and it's more beautiful.

Not keen of the 6 hours flight to Fiji and the lack of familiar fresh cow milk for Rafa as he still drinks a lot of fresh milk every day now and may need to drink even more than usual if the food there don't suit his taste.
